April 15 (The Sports Xchange) - The Boston Bruins fired general manager Peter Chiarelli on Wednesday after the team missed the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons.

The Bruins announced an interim general manager will not be named at this time and the search for a new hire will be led by chief executive officer Charlie Jacobs and president Cam Neely.

New York Rangers forward Rick Nash missed practice because of the flu, but coach Alain Vigneault said Nash should be able to play Thursday night in the opening game of the Eastern Conference first round against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Madison Square Garden.
Nash missed the final two games of the season with an undisclosed injury.

St. Louis Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said goaltender Jake Allen will start Game 1 of the Western Conference first-round series against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night.
Allen has one minute of playoff experience and that came during the 2011-12 season, but the 24-year-old played well down the stretch.

The Calgary Flames signed goaltender Jon Gillies, who just led Providence to its first NCAA title.
The Flames also assigned goaltender Joni Ortio to the Adirondack Flames of the American Hockey League.

The Los Angeles Kings signed forward Adrian Kempe to a three-year entry-level contract.
The 18-year-old Kempe is a 6-foot-1, 187-pound native of Kramfors, Sweden, who has appeared in 95 regular-season games with Modo of the Swedish Hockey League, totaling 28 points (18 assists) and 54 penalty minutes.

Edmonton Oilers forward Nail Yakupov will not attend Russia's training camp for the upcoming World Hockey Championship due to a hip injury, the Oilers announced.
The team also said forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will not play for Canada in the tournament because of a broken right foot.
