Once the playoffs end, Babcock becomes the biggest free agent in hockey and could become the highest-paid coach in NHL history. His contract expires on June 30.
Babcock said Friday that he and general manager Ken Holland will talk about his contract within the next 10 days.
The Red Wings ended their season on Wednesday night when they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game Seven of their Eastern Conference first-round series.
Babcock, who turned 52 on Wednesday, is seeking at least $4 million per year, according to the Detroit Free Press. Holland has offered $3.25 million per year for four years, which Babcock rejected.
The Red Wings have lost five of their past six playoff series and have not advanced past the second round since 2009. Babcock has guided the Red Wings to the playoffs every year.
