Hynes, 40, becomes the youngest coach in the National Hockey League. Minnesota's Mike Yeo, who turns 42 in July, previously held that distinction.
Devils general manager Ray Shero announced the move and said Hynes was the only candidate to be offered the job. Shero expects the Devils to be a fast, attacking-type team that plays solid defense under Hynes.
The Penguins announced that they received New Jersey's third-round draft pick in 2016 as compensation for Hynes' hiring. Hynes has been coach of the American Hockey League's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins since 2010.
The Devils fired Pete DeBoer on Dec. 26 and finished the season with Scott Stevens and Adam Oates coaching the team along with team president Lou Lamoriello. Shero was hired as GM on May 4.

The Montreal Canadiens reached agreement with defenseman Jeff Petry on a contract extension that runs through the 2020-21 season, the team announced.
Reports indicated that the deal is for $33 million and averages $5.5 million per year.
Sportsnet reported that there is a partial no-trade clause included.

The Washington Capitals re-signed right winger Garrett Mitchell to a two-year, two-way contract, the team announced.
Drafted by the Capitals in the sixth round in 2009, Mitchell has 25 goals, 30 assists and 349 penalty minutes in 224 career American Hockey League games with Hershey.))
