Oct 6 (The Sports Xchange) - Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom is expected to miss the first few games of the NHL regular season as he continues to recover from hip surgery.

On Tuesday, Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said the Capitals initially thought Backstrom could miss anywhere from zero to 10 games.

"Now it seems to be four or five games," MacLellan said, according to NHL.com. "There's still uncertainty there, but it looks like he's progressing well."

Los Angeles Kings left winger Dwight King was placed on the injured-reserve list because of a lower-back injury.

He was injured in Saturday preseason game when he blocked a shot.

Coach Darryl Sutter said Monday that King would be sidelined for "an extended period of time."

The St. Louis Blues named Rob DiMaio their director of player personnel. He has served as the Blues' director of pro scouting since August, 2012. Doug Armstrong remains the Blues general manager.

Martin Brodeur, who helped the New Jersey Devils to three Stanley Cup championships and set a number of records, will have his jersey No. 30 retired by the Devils before their game Feb. 9 against the Edmonton Oilers. A statue of the goaltender will be built outside Prudential Center.

The Winnipeg Jets agreed to terms with forward Thomas Raffl on a one-year, one-way contract worth $575,000, the team announced.

Raffl, 29, is the older brother of Flyers forward Michael Raffl.
