Oct 9 (The Sports Xchange) - The Anaheim Ducks on Friday signed defenseman Simon Despres to a five-year contract extension through the 2020-21 NHL season.

The deal is worth $18.5 million, an average of $3.7 million per season, a source told ESPN.com.
Despres, 24, has recorded 39 points (six points, 33 assists) with a plus-29 rating and 142 penalty minutes in 160 career NHL games with the Ducks and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Despres, who was acquired from the Penguins on March 2, also tallied one goal and six assists with eight penalty minutes in 22 career Stanley Cup playoff games.

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Logan Pyett is out indefinitely after being diagnosed with sarcoma, a form of cancer, in his upper left leg.
The Flyers made the announcement in a statement.
Pyett, 27, signed a contract with the team's American Hockey League affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, on Aug. 21, and he attended training camp with the Flyers. He had spent the previous two seasons playing in the Kontinental Hockey League.

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman James Wisniewski suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will undergo surgery.
Wisniewski is expected to be sidelined approximately six months. He was injured just 47 seconds into Thursday's season-opening game against the Nashville Predators.
The 31-year-old Wisniewski was obtained in the offseason from the Anaheim Ducks for goaltender Anton Khudobin. He is in his 11th NHL season and has 53 goals in 552 career regular-season games.

The Los Angeles Kings signed goaltender Peter Budaj to a one-year contract.
The 30-year-old Budaj is a 6-foot-1, 192-pound native of Banska Bystrica, Slovakia, who appeared in 19 regular-season games last season with St. John's of the American Hockey League. He compiled an 0-9-6 record with a .888 save percentage and 3.55 goals-against average.
Budaj has appeared in 296 regular-season games in nine seasons in the NHL with Colorado and Montreal, registering a 124-107-36 record with a .903 save percentage and 2.76 goals-against average.
