June 22 (The Sports Xchange) - Professional hockey will be coming to Las Vegas as the NHL announced on Wednesday that it has granted an expansion franchise to the city.

The franchise, which will begin play in 2017-18 as a member of the Pacific Division, received a unanimous vote by the league's Board of Governors in Las Vegas on Wednesday.
With the announcement, the NHL became the first of the four North American professional sports leagues to land a team in Las Vegas.

The Arizona Coyotes signed former Dallas Stars defenseman Alex Goligoski to a five-year contract.
Terms were not disclosed, but a source told ESPN that the average annual salary of the deal is $5.475 million.

The Montreal Canadiens agreed to terms with defenseman Joel Hanley on a one-year, two-way contract.
Hanley, acquired via free-agency on July 1, 2015, made his NHL debut on March 20 after making his way to the Canadiens as part of an emergency recall.

The St. Louis Blues bolstered their depth at forward by signing veteran Scottie Upshall to a one-year contract extension.
The team did not divulge financial terms for the 32-year-old Upshall, who collected six goals, eight assists and 44 penalty minutes in 70 games last season.

The Chicago Blackhawks agreed to terms with forward Dennis Rasmussen on a one-year contract. Rasmussen, 25, had four goals and five assists in 44 regular-season games with Chicago this season.
