Helm was hurt when he was checked heavily by Colorado defenseman Erik Johnson. He hobbled to the bench, unable to bend his left leg, and went directly to the Detroit dressing room.

Helm did not return to the game. Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said Helm is day-to-day because of a lower body injury.

The oft-injured Helm missed 28 games earlier this season when he sustained a dislocated shoulder after being checked by then-Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Nikita Nesterov.

The Red Wings loaned forward Tomas Nosek to the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins, terminating his Saturday recall on emergency conditions.

Nosek, 24, has 39 points (15 goals, 24 assists) in 48 games for Grand Rapids this season and ranks fifth on the team in scoring. He made his NHL debut with the Red Wings last year and played in six games with the Red Wings, recording two penalty minutes, six hits and three takeaways.

The Tampa Bay Lightning recalled forward Joel Vermin from the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL.

Vermin, 25, played in 43 games with the Crunch this season, collecting 12 goals, 16 assists and 17 penalty minutes. He skated in 11 games with the Lightning this season, tallying three assists.

The Calgary Flames assigned goaltender Jon Gillies to the Stockton Heat of the AHL.

Gillies, 23, was recalled on Wednesday on an emergency basis following goalie Brian Elliott's illness but did not appear in a game.

Gillies has played in 34 games for Stockton in his second pro season, compiling a 14-14-1 record with a shutout, a 2.97 goals-against average and .909 save percentage. (Editing by Gene Cherry)
