The Pittsburgh Penguins blew a two-goal lead in their Stanley Cup final opener against San Jose on Monday but Nick Bonino's strike with 2:33 remaining in the third period lifted them to a 3-2 victory over the Sharks.
First-period goals 62 seconds apart from Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary staked the Pens to a 2-0 lead but the Sharks rebounded in the second through Tomas Hertl and Patrick Marleau.
The game appeared destined for overtime until Bonino pounced on a puck in front of the San Jose goal and lifted a shot over the glove hand of goalie Martin Jones.
It was the third straight win for the Penguins after they beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in Games Six and Seven to advance to the Stanley Cup final.
