IOC unveils PyeongChang 2018 medals

The International Olympic Committee has unveiled the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

The medals were revealed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Korea Herald reported.
The medals, designed by Lee Suk-woo, have Hangeul (Korean alphabet) consonants etched on to them, with the gold weighing 586 grams, the silver 580g and the bronze 493g.

"Hangeul is the foundation and the soul of Korean culture," PyeongChang's organizing committee said.
"Hangeul is considered the seed that eventually blossoms and bears fruit, which symbolize Korean culture. The trunk is the process of that development."

"I tried some new techniques and went through a lot of trials and errors," Lee said.
"I wanted the medals to represent the hard work and dedication of the athletes. And the finished products came out a lot better than I'd expected."
The medals are 92.5mm wide, 109 mm long, and depending on the medal between 4.4 mm and 9.42 mm thick.
