Legendary swimmer Phelps added gold medals 20 and 21 to his incredible Olympic collection as he triumphed in the 200m butterfly and the 4x200m freestyle relay on a very special night for the American.
The 31-year-old powered home to win the 200m butterfly in a time of 1:53.36 to avenge his London defeat to rival Chad le Clos and his night got even better as the USA took gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
It was a night of jubilant celebration for Great Britain in the pool too as Siobhan-Marie O'Connor took silver in the 200m individual medley and James Guy led the men's quartet to 4x200m freestyle relay silver behind Phelps and the USA.
Away from the pool, Americans Simone Biles and Serena Williams had evenings of stark contrast: the former cemented her status as a global superstar leading the USA team to gymnastics glory; the latter suffered another shock defeat, this time in the tennis singles to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina.

Leading Brits

It was a night of glorious celebration for Great Britain in the pool as Siobhan-Marie O'Connor took silver in the 200m individual medley and James Guy led the men's quartet to 4x200m freestyle relay silver.
Johanna Konta slogged for over three hours to a 3-6 7-5 7-5 victory against Svetlana Kuznetsova in the tennis singles, while Andy Murray made a confident bid to defend his Olympic title with a second round 6-2 6-1 victory over Juan Monaco.
Great Britain enjoyed a fantastic day in the rugby sevens, winning both their matches - a morning match against Kenya, and an evening game against Japan - to ensure their progress out of the group stage.
Meanwhile, there was heartbreak for world champion David Florence who missed out on a medal in the canoe slalom C1 event as France's Denis Gargaud Chanut took gold.

Biggest shock

There's no competition here. Olympic champion and world number one Serena Williams tumbled out of the singles competition in the third round after a shock defeat to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina.
Svitolina, ranked 20 in the world, stunned the London Games gold medallist 6-4 6-3 to record a memorable victory against the American.
Serena, who has won 22 Grand Slam singles titles, looked out of sorts as she crashed to another shock defeat in a desperately-disappointing Games for her.

What went viral?

As the women emerged for the 10m synchronised diving final, everyone was chatting about one thing: the GREEN water that occupied the pool.
How had it changed colour, barely 24 hours after the men dived in far more appealing water?

How the stars reacted

GB bronze medallist Tom Daley ranked among the most confused stars at the state of the diving pool:
Meanwhile, fresh from his electrifying and downright bizarre press conference, Usain Bolt shared his favourite snap with his fans: "Samba!!!!"
Okay, okay: here's that reporter's crazy rap about Bolt too...
