Jason Lee, a 27-year-old jiu-jitsu fighter, tweeted: "What did you guys get up to yesterday? I got kidnapped. Go Olympics! #Rio2016."
The athlete, who has been living in Brazil for nearly a year, says he was abducted by men wearing police uniforms, taken to cash machines and forced to get money out of them two weeks before the Games kick off in the host city.
Lee, however, will no be competing in the Olympics, because jiu-jitsu is not a recognised event in the Games.
The news comes after the Australian Olympic team refused to move into the Olympic Village due to "blocked toilets, leaking pipes and exposed wiring".
