The quartet of Alex Gregory, Mohamed Sbihi, Constantine Louloudis and George Nash earned GB’s sixth gold medal of the Games, enough to propel them into fourth in the overall table.
Australia faded in the final 500m to take silver, with Italy roaring through the closing stages to snatch bronze.

Earlier, Glover and Stanning had repeated their London 2012 triumph with a remarkable row.
It had appeared they would romp to victory after opening up a huge advantage in the first 1500m, but their lead disintegrated in the final quarter as New Zealand duo Rebecca Scown and Genevieve Behrent threatened a huge upset.
However, they held on to extend their unbeaten five-year run in style. Denmark pair Hedvig Rasmussen and Anne Andersen took bronze.
The rowing elite join other British gold medallists Adam Peaty (swimming), Joe Clarke (kayak slalom), Jack Laugher and Chris Mears (diving) and the men’s team sprint (cycling).
