Dwyer boosts Wolves

The returning Brad Dwyer boosted Warrington with a vital try in a 34-18 victory over Salford.

The Wolves were hanging onto a 22-18 lead when super sub Dwyer darted over from dummy half.

Ben Currie was the Wolves star with the opening try, and he set up a hat-trick for winger Gene Ormsby.

It was a brave effort by Salford, still without a host of players, who trailed 16-12 at half-time.

The Red Devils were boosted by the return of Cory Paterson after a three-match ban, while Junior Sau, Jason Walton and Carl Forster also returned alongside 18-year-old scrum half Josh Wood.

Ben Westwood made his 350th career appearance for Warrington, who were missing skipper Joel Monaghan.

Stefan Ratchford returned to face his old club with Daryl Clark also back and Dwyer on the bench.

Prop Ashton Sims was forced to make an uncharacteristic kick on the sixth tackle as Warrington tried to penetrate a determined defence.

But the Wolves went ahead after 11 minutes when Ben Currie charged down a Theo Fages clearance kick for his 10th try of the season and Ratchford booted the conversion.

After Warrington allowed the restart to sail over the dead line, Paterson scythed through on an angled run and then added the goal to level the scores.

The Wolves did not take long to regain the lead with Chris Bridge's smart offload allowing Declan Patton and Currie to send Ormsby over in the corner and make it 10-6.

A thundering hit by Harrison Hansen on Sims lifted Salford's spirits before Myler was forced to quit in a daze after trying to stop a marauding Paterson charge.

Then Clark launched a darting break from dummy half to send Ratchford weaving his way past Jason Walton and Greg Johnson to cross after 25 minutes.

Ratchford tagged on the goal to make it 16-6 before a shaken Morley was forced off after a collision with Sims.

Laithwaite was denied a try by a Sau tackle as Warrington took charge with Currie going close from a teasing Patton grabber kick.

But Salford hit back just before the break with Sau ploughing between Bridge and Kevin Penny for a try with Paterson again landing a difficult conversion to cut the gap to 16-12.

Morley returned for Salford at the start of the second half but was soon penalised for a high shot on George King.

Battling Salford thought they had gone ahead for the first time when Paterson robbed Clark of possession and raced clear to score.

But the video referees ruled Paterson had knocked the ball forward.

Salford recovered from the disappointment with a 40-20 from Fages and Jason Walton going close as the Red Devils rattled the Wolves.

Walton was then stopped in full flow by Dwyer to allow Currie's skill to create Ormsby's second try on the hour with Ratchford booting the touchline conversion to open up a 22-12 lead.

Salford refused to concede defeat with Niall Evalds going over after 63 minutes for his ninth try of the campaign and Paterson's goal reduced the deficit to four points.

Dwyer threw a dummy to go over from short range for a crucial try which Ratchford converted to make it 28-18.

Ormsby flew in at the corner from another Currie pass to complete his hat-trick with a magnificent acrobatic effort eight minutes from time. Ratchford kicked the points.
