Lee Radford in no mood to celebrate despite win over Catalans

Hull coach Lee Radford signed a new three-year deal and then saw his side go third in the table, but was unable to enjoy it too much.

News of Radford's extension through to 2019 came out on Friday morning and his side made it seven wins out of eight at the KC Stadium as they beat Catalans Dragons 28-26.

Hull now sit third, one of three sides on 18 points and two behind leaders Warrington, giving Radford plenty to be happy about on the face of it.

But speaking afterwards, he said: "It's a big result, a big victory against quality opposition but I wish I'd have stayed in and watched Leeds against Huddersfield!

"It was a bizarre game to watch, I'm not whingeing, we won, it's a win, but we weren't at it and there's so much improvement in us. We need to see that next week in the cup, we have so much to fix up.

"If we'd have got beat, I'd have copped it. We didn't have the right attitude."

It is a sign of the changing landscape at Hull that Radford - under pressure on the terraces at times during his reign - was able to be so critical in victory.

Asked if a new deal had ever been in doubt, he joked: "I ripped it up at half-time."

Catalans coach Laurent Frayssinous was left scratching his head as how his side's seven-game winning run had come to an end.

Without Australian stars Todd Carney and David Taylor, the Dragons conceded 15 penalties, were on two team warnings and had a man sin-binned but still only lost by two points.

Frayssinous contested that had a Pat Richards conversion been given, rather than the touch judges splitting their decision, the result would have been different.

"I am not very happy, we conceded 15 penalties, winning seven, and I'm not sure we had that lack of discipline compared to Hull," he said.

"Plus the yellow card, plus the conversion, plus losing by two points… it's strange."

Richards' brace of tries before the break got his side right back in the match and, in the process, pushed him up to fourth on Super League's all-time leading scorers list with 2,242 points.

"Pat is very honest; one touch judge puts the flag up, the other not. Why us?"
