Smith enjoys fiery Currie

Winger Greg Ormsby grabbed his first hat-trick for the Wolves, with his third try a rather acrobatic effort eight minutes from time.

But Currie was the star performer, scoring the first try and providing the final pass for all three Ormsby touchdowns.

Smith said: "Greg's try was a spectacular effort and he did exceptionally well but all our wingers get to practice that sort of stuff. The bloke who fed him a few times was on fire.

"Ben was awesome and has been a stand-out player all season.

"He should be playing for England at some stage in the future."

Brad Dwyer, re-signed from a season-long loan spell at London Broncos for £50,000 this week, scored a vital try when Warrington led 22-18.

Dwyer replaced Leigh-bound Mickey Higham and Smith added: "Brad made a huge difference and was terrific when he came on. He had to be patient.

"We had to really dig in because Salford had a real crack at us.

"They've had two weeks to get ready for this and we took time to wear them down."

Salford trailed 16-12 at half time and cut the gap to 22-18 with tries from Cory Paterson, Junior Sau and Niall Evalds with Paterson kicking three goals.

Salford attracted a 6,159 crowd after offering cut price admission for £5 and juniors free of charge.

The Red Devils, still without a host of players through injury and suspended Rangi Chase, turned in a battling effort and had a second Paterson try disallowed by the video referee.

Coach Iestyn Harris, who handed 18-year-old scrum half Josh Wood his debut, said: "The penalty count killed us and it was 11-2 with 75 minutes on the clock.

"That was frustrating and they had a lot more good ball than us.

"Every time we got to their end we seemed to have a penalty against us.

"I didn't think Cory knocked in for his try but I would say that. I thought it was a 50-50 call but a lot of those 50-50 calls resulted in penalties against us.

"Theo Fages is getting better and better and will be a lot more dangerous when he has a natural half-back partner back.

"We are really competing but not getting what we want out of the games."

Warrington's other try came from ex Salford star Stefan Ratchford, who also booted five goals from six attempts.
