Kiwis quiet over Ross

There has been much speculation that the 24-year-old (pictured) would be left behind to bulk up in the gym when New Zealand head to Japan next month for the Bledisloe Cup clash against Australia - the first of a six-match tour that includes Tests with Wales, Italy, England and France and a game against the Barbarians.

"I think, as with everyone else, it has got to be what is right for Isaac. He has obviously got a lot of talent and some areas have been well publicised that he needs to work on," Smith told The Press newspaper.

"It is whether he can do that while he is playing or whether he needs to have extended time in the gym."

Ross played the first eight Tests of the season in the absence of veteran lock Ali Williams but was omitted for the final Tri-Nations clash against Australia in Wellington, with forwards coach Steve Hansen hinting at the time he needed to add some size to his frame to allow him to better cope with the physical demands of international rugby.

Otago's Tom Donnelly made his All Blacks debut in place of Ross and he along with Brad Thorn, Jason Eaton and Anthony Boric are the leading candidates to tour.

Boric, who impressed in his first season with the All Blacks last year, has missed all the Tests to date because of a toe injury but in recent weeks has been back in action for his North Harbour province.

The tour squad is due to be announced on October 18. Already ruled out through injury are Ali Williams, Keven Mealamu, Richard Kahui and Isaia Toeava.
