Jones, installed as the England coach after the disastrous World Cup campaign on home soil, had long been an admirer of Guardiola, and spent a day with him as he put his players through their paces at Bayern Munich.
"I was always fascinated how Barcelona played, I loved the way they move the ball into space," he explained to the BBC.
"And particularly coaching Japan where we had a small team, we had to move the ball, to beat teams by moving the ball, so I thought if there's one bloke in the world I have to see it should be him.
"I was embarrassed at the end, how badly I'd been coaching for the previous two years."
What struck him most?
"How hard he worked the players. These are guys earning £300,000 a week and he was driving them to be better. It was all about working off the ball, and I thought if this guy can do it in football then…
"You know, we set ourselves limitations in rugby - and that's one of the things I want to change with England. Because sometimes it's not the players who put limitations on the game, it's the coaches."
