World number six Murphy dropped to a 4-3 defeat to Kurt Maflin in the second round as the bottom half of the draw played through to the last 16.

Dott - ranked seventh in the world - lost by the same scoreline to Marcus Campbell, also in his second match of the day at the World Snooker Academy.

World number eight Ali Carter was also bounced out of the competition after a 4-1 defeat to Stephen Maguire in the third round.

But it was a good day for former world champion Stephen Hendry, who saw off Ken Doherty 4-2 in the third round to seal a place in the last 16.

Mark Williams was the highest profile casualty when the top half of the draw kicked off the action a day earlier, the world number two soundly beaten 4-1 by Mike Dunn in the second round.

John Higgins also fell at the second hurdle, the world number four also dropping 4-1 to Mark Davis.

Jimmy White won two close encounters against Ross Higgins and Nigel Bond, both 4-3, only to slip to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Martin Gould.

Ding Junhui hit a maximum 147 break as he powered to a 4-0 first round victory over Brandon Winstone, but by the time he reached the third round he was dumped out by the same scoreline against the in-form Ricky Walden.

The last 16 matches onwards will be played on January 6-8 at the Event Forum, Munich.
