Mark Selby overcomes Mark Joyce despite neck pain

Runs of 65, 87 and 58 saw Selby into a three-frame advantage, but Joyce replied in style with a 99 to cut the arrears.

Joyce then took a scrappy fifth frame 66-34, but Selby replied taking frame six 57-52.

It took two visits from Joyce in frame seven to cut Selby’s lead to one but the world champion secured passage to the next round courtesy of a break of 90 in frame eight.

"Yesterday I pulled my neck again, as I did a few years ago. So I felt a bit uncomfortable out there," said Selby.

"Hopefully it won't be as bad as it was before and I'll be ok within the next few days.

"Yesterday I was struggling so I did some stretches, took some painkillers and had a massage. It felt ok before the match started, then at the interval I went to the toilet and slipped, and felt it. I can get down on the shot, it's just a little bit of pain so hopefully it will wear off.

"My health is more important than anything else."

Joining Selby in the next round will be John Higgins, who beat Yu Delu by the same score.

Higgins raced into a 3-1 advantage but Delu ground out frame five 56-46 before runs of 31 and 56 secured frame six.

Home hope Delu was first to get his hand on the table in frame seven but could only muster six and had to watch on as Higgins took full advantage with a break of 114 to put himself one frame away from the next round.

2011 world champion Higgins secured a 5-3 win with a 72 in frame eight and moved into the round two, which starts on Wednesday.

Judd Trump showed why he is tournament favourites in the evening session as he compiled two centuries in completing a 5-3 win over Andrew Higginson.
