The 24-year-old from Melbourne, who became the first Australian player to win a ranking tournament by beating Jamie Cope 9-5 in the final of the Royal London Watches Grand Prix in October, faces either John Higgins or Stephen Maguire in the last eight.
World number 13 Robertson started strongly at the Wembley Conference Centre with breaks of 57 and 86.
The 2000 and 2003 world champion looked poised to take a frame back only to miss an easy yellow and hand the Aussie a 3-0 lead and a 78 run in the next frame further dampened the Welshman's spirits entering the interval.
A superb 102 break followed by a run of 88 secured victory for the 24-year-old who was delighted with his display.
"My safety and long-potting were good as well as my break-building. In the past my weakness has sometimes been not putting away enough frames in one visit but I've been working on that," he said.
"I've improved stupid amounts since last time I played here, you would barely recognise me as the same player.
"I was disappointed with my performance at the UK Championship. I celebrated for too long after winning the Grand Prix, that was a lesson learned and I won't do it again.
"But if I keep playing as I did today there's no doubt that I can win the tournament. It doesn't affect me who I play, I just want to enjoy it."
