25 May 1980 – DAVIS CLAIMS WORLD BILLIARDS TITLE AT THE AGE OF 66
Fred Davis became only the second player, after his brother Joe, to win the world professional titles at both snooker and billiards. The eight-times world snooker champion added the billiards title, beating the defending champion, Rex Williams, 5978-4452 at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds. He also became the oldest champion at the age of 66.
28 May 1908 – BIRTH OF ALEC BROWN
Alec Brown played in the world championship 14 times between 1936 and 1955, reaching the semi-final four times. He also won the News of the World title in 1951. He will however be remembered chiefly for attempting to play a tricky shot with a cue no bigger than a pen in the Daily Mail Gold Cup in 1938. It was ruled a foul and immediately the rules were changed fixing the minimum cue length at three feet.
28 May 1928 - JOHN SMYTH BORN
John Smyth became snooker's first full-time referee in 1978. He was in charge of the very first world hampionship final at the Crucible in 1977 and also handled the 1982 final between Alex Higgins and Ray Reardon. He died in January 2007.
28 May 2000 – THORNE WINS SENIORS TITLE
What was supposed to be the first event of a new Seniors Tour, the World Seniors Masters Trophy at London's RAC Club, was won by Willie Thorne. In the final of this single frame event he beat Cliff Thorburn 84-8. Due to lack of sponsorship, the tour never got off the ground.
29 May 1982 – DAVIS WINS PONTINS PRO
At Prestatyn, Steve Davis beat Ray Reardon 9-4 to win the professional title at the Pontins Spring Festival.
29 May 1994 – HENDRY WINS HIS THIRD LEAGUE TITLE
At the Atlantis-Rheinhotel in Bingen, Germany Stephen Hendry beat John Parrott 10-7 in the play-off final to win the Lowen Matchroom European League title for the third time.
