Full name: Luca Brecel
Nationality: Belgian
Age: 14 (DOB: March 8, 1995)
World Ranking: N/A
Career highlights: Youngest European U19 champion; European U16 champion (Malta Open) 2007; Belgian champion at U21 and U16 level.
General
Earlier this month, Brecel made history when he became the youngest player to win the European U19 championships in Russia. The youngster from the Flemish town of Dilsen-Stokkem in northeast Belgium only turned 14 in March but continued to impress by winning biggest title of his young career in St Petersburg. The European U19 champions is usually granted a place on the main tour the following season, but Brecel will have to wait until he is 16 and can turn professional.
Strengths
Where to start? Brecel has already had 30 147s in practice and had his first competitive century - an effort of 122 - when he was 12. His natural ability at his age is comparative to the junior players who developed into top senior stars, such as Ronnie O'Sullivan and Mark Williams. His maturity and ability in matchplay situations is also remarkable, given his inexperience. In the U19 final against Michael Walsey he came from 5-4 down to win 6-5, taking the final frame on the black. He also clinched his place in the final with a break of 135 against Jack Lisowski. Seems to have all the attributes needed to become a top pro.
Weaknesses
His biggest weakness is, quite simply, his age. The expectation surrounding Brecel is already exceptionally high and keeping himself grounded and sensible over the next few years will be his biggest test. However, with the help of his family and coaches, and if he can maintain a strong appetite for the game, there is no reason why we won't see him on Eurosport before his teenage years are over.
