World number one Judd Trump began his Haikou World Open campaign in ruthless form, whitewashing Mark Joyce 5-0 in the first round.

Though Trump only passed the 50 mark on two breaks in the match and managed a highest run of just 66, he comfortably froze Joyce out of the contest and even came back from his opponent’s highest run of 69 to steal the second frame.
Trump will play veteran Nigel Bond – who is more than twice the age of ‘The Juddernaut’ - in the last 16 after 1995 World Championship finalist Bond advanced via walkover due to Ali Carter’s withdrawal.
Neil Robertson also appeared certain to win his opening round contest in five frames but in the end had to hold off a Dominic Dale fight-back attempt to win 5-2.
The Australian was 4-0 up on his Welsh opponent at the mid-session interval, winning all four frames with emphatic scores built on more modest visits, failing to hit a single half-century.
Dale came back out ready to pull off an improbable comeback and halved the deficit with breaks of 54 and 69 before the 2010 Crucible kingpin finished the job in frame seven to set up a second-round tie with Graeme Dott.
Dott in the same session progressed past Jamie Cope by the same scoreline, and the methodical Scotsman built atypically big on a day when more traditional high-scorers Trump and Robertson ground out their frames.
A fourth-frame 139 clearance was the highlight of Dott’s inspired performance, coming after a 98 which combined to tie the match at 2-2 after Cope had surged ahead.
And Dott’s momentum continued after the break with knocks of 68 and 83 coming either side of a more trademark battle won on the colours to putt Dott through with five straight frames.
Matthew Stevens won the marathon match of the session, squeaking past David Gilbert in a 5-4 thriller which moves him onto a battle with Shaun Murphy for a spot in the last eight.
