The pair shared the opening two scrappy frames of the morning before O'Sullivan hit his straps with a break of 105 to open up an 8-3 lead.
But the Melbourne Machine took the 12th to cut the gap to four before the mid-session interval, and took advantage of loose shots from O'Sullivan to take the first two back to get himself right back in the match.
And Robertson finished the morning with 77 in the 15th and a superb 140 clearance in the last to ensure he will begin tonight's evening session with a great chance of making his first Crucible quarter-final.
In Monday morning's other match, Mark Selby became only the second player to notch three successive centuries at the Crucible as he opened up a 10-6 lead against 2002 World Champion Peter Ebdon .
Selby followed in the footsteps of John Higgins, who scored three successive tons during 1998 quarter-final against John Parrott, with breaks of 100, 122 and 119 as he took the first four frames of the morning.
In typically determined style, Ebdon dragged himself back in to the match, though a crucial miss on the brown allowed Selby to pinch the final frame of the morning.
