Double gold for Slater

The multi-world medallist swam to a new world record time and her first gold of the day in the women’s S8 100m Butterfly. 

For the first leg of the race, Slater was pushed all the way by Kateryna Istomina (Ukraine) but a good turn put the Brit in a good position.  

The Commonwealth silver medallist put in a strong final 50m to touch the wall in 1:08.20 to lower Jessica Long’s previous standard.  

“I was feeling really really good in the water this morning,” Slater said. “So I knew I had a good swim in me. I was quite shocked at the time but I am totally over the moon. I couldn’t be happier.  

“I’ve been trying new things out in my training and it looks like everything is going to plan now. Working in the National Performance Centre has made me much more relaxed and I have all of my support services there and I have got great coaching support as well. I couldn’t ask for any more.” 

Ukraine’s Kateryna Istomina took the silver in 1:09.09 and Denmark’s Amalie Vinther won bronze in 1:19.36. 

Slater’s second gold of the evening came in the SM8 200m Individual Medley which saw the Brit power through her Freestyle leg to take the victory.  

She went into the lead early on but fell behind in the Breaststroke leg to come back strong at the end of the race. She touched in 2:41.73. 

“I obviously wanted to go out there and do my best and that’s what I did today,” Slater said. “It was pretty tough having two of my main events in one day but I just gave it my all and I came out with two golds so I can’t complain. 

“I am totally amazed by how well I’ve done so far this week but I knew my training had been going really well so I knew I had good performances in me coming into this.” 

Russia’s Olesya Vladykina won the silver in 2:46.36 and Vinther took bronze in 3:03.15. 

Andrew Mullen lowered the S5 50m Butterfly European record on his way to claiming his first major Championship gold medal.  

Mullen swam an excellent race to take the record. He touched in 37.66 for his first victory.  

“I am so pleased with that,” Mullen said. “It was a great swim. I was really looking forward to the final and swimming fast. Three years ago at Europeans I went into the final fastest and came away with the silver so to get the gold this time I am really pleased.”  

Beytullah Eroglu (Turkey) won silver in 38.18 and Andrea Castagneto (Italy) took bronze in 40.76. 

Ollie Hynd added gold in the SM8 200m IM to the title he won yesterday in the S8 400m Freestyle.  

The Commonwealth Champion took the lead at the half way point of the race and continued to increase his lead through the final 100m. 

Hynd touched in 2:25.22 to retain his title.

“It was a tough race this morning,” Hynd said. “I wanted to try and take it out hard in the front end and bring it back in the final 100m which I am usually really good at. 

“I was able to do that but I am disappointed with the time but it is about getting your hand on the wall first.”

The silver medal went to Konstantin Lisenkov (Russia) in 2:30.34 and Niels Mortensen (Denmark) won bronze in 2:32.81.

The Brits scored gold and silver in the S9 100m Freestyle with Stephanie Millward and Amy Marren finishing first and second respectively.

Marren took the race out from the start and turned in the lead but an excellent final 25m saw Millward overtake and claim the gold.  

Millward reached for the wall in 1:04.08 with Marren claiming silver in 1:04.22.  

“I am absolutely over excited right now,” Millward said. “It’s so good. I didn’t really expect to win that one but I am so impressed that I did. The time wasn’t great but you know you can’t have everything and the gold medal is perfect.” 

Bronze went to Sarai Gascon (Spain) in 1:05.03. Claire Cashmore finished in sixth place in 1:07.79. 

Scott Quin secured his first medal in the SB14 100m Breaststroke in a new British record time of 1:07.95. Aaron Moores won the bronze in 1:09.85.  

Ellie Simmonds set a new British record in the S6 50m Freestyle as she lowered her PB that she set four years earlier. She claimed silver in 35.23.  

European Champion Hannah Russell was back in the water this morning and claimed silver in the S12 200M IM with a new Personal best time of 2:35.79.  

Fresh from winning gold yesterday, Sascha Kindred was back in action in the S6 50m Freestyle and secured silver in 32.46.  

Nicole Lough won the bronze in the SB14 100m Breaststroke in a time of 1:18.27.
