Murray became the top-ranked man in tennis for the first time at the weekend when he was handed a walkover in the semi-finals of the Paris Masters due to an injury to Milos Raonic.
He consolidated his hard-won status with a win in the final against John Isner, sending him into the season-ending showpiece at London’s O2 Arena on a high.
Murray is in Group John McEnroe while the man he deposed as number one, Novak Djokovic, coming up against Raonic, Gael Monfils and Dominic Thiem in Group Ivan Lendl.
Wawrinka is the biggest threat to Murray in the group. The world No. 3 won the US Open this year and has a Grand Slam win to his name in each of the past three years.
And Murray is determined not to let his new status as the new No. 1 distract him from the task at hand in London. "Yesterday was a great day, today has just been a normal day at home with the family," he said.
"Once I am out on the court, you do not think about your ranking. You are playing against the top eight players in world. I look forward to getting out there and playing at the O2.
"I will try and take a few days rest now, start hitting again on Thursday.
"I need a few days break. It will be one big push for all the guys, everyone has played a lot of tennis and hopefully everyone can play well."
