FEDERER 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 6-3 NADAL: FEDERER IS CHAMPION AGAIN! A remarkable match and a remarkable final game as Federer wins his 18th grand slam title. The tears are flowing! Sad there had to be a loser. HOW THE FINAL GAME UNFOLDED: The Swiss tries the serve and volley on the opening point but Nadal comes up with the pass. Nadal digs into his remarkable reserves to force Federer to miss a backhand. Federer comes up with a big serve to get into the game but Nadal forces two break back points. The first is saved with an ace up the tee and the second with a ridiculously brave inside out forehand winner. A long Nadal return brings Federer championship point but after a successful challenge on second serve, he misses a forehand as the game goes back to deuce. Another ace brings a second championship point and a forehand catches the line to give Federer the title. Nadal challenges, but it’s in vain and this remarkable story is complete.

FEDERER 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 5-3 NADAL: FEDERER BREAKS! A wicked sliced backhand forces Nadal to hook a forehand wide before a perfectly executed point had Nadal in deeper trouble at 0-30. The pressure builds as Nadal serves only a third double fault to concede three break points but the Spaniard pulls out a remarkable forehand to save the first off a great return. The body serve does the trick again on the second and Federer mistimes a backhand return as a third comes and goes. The point of the match, possibly the tournament, follows with Federer pulling out all the stops with a remarkable forehand up the line. Nadal staves off another break point but Federer won’t be denied, another superb backhand forcing the error. He’ll serve for the match with new balls!

FEDERER 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 4-3 NADAL: Huge cheers from the crowd now as Federer opens up with an ace. The decibels rise further as the Swiss volleys into open court and it gets louder still as he consolidates the break with a second serve ace. Must there be a loser?

-

FEDERER 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 3-3 NADAL: BACK ON SERVE! Federer trades with Nadal from the baseline and pulls out a cracking backhand winner to open proceedings. He forces Nadal to net to move further ahead but then mistimes a forehand before the Spaniard scores with a forehand winner. Nadal saves yet another break point with that cracked lasso forehand and but misses with another as Federer breaks through. What a final!

FEDERER 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 2-3 NADAL: Federer really having to pull out his very best to stay with Nadal at the moment and he needs his best tennis to hold to 15. Still very much in this gripping final.

FEDERER 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 NADAL: SET! Nadal serving with new balls and persisting with the body serve to good effect. He races to a love hold and we’re going all the way, folks!

-
-

FEDERER 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-5 NADAL: Federer in no mood to surrender this set just yet and he wants the advantage of serving first in the fifth at the very least. Another rare missed midcourt forehand precedes a 15th ace and he asks Nadal the serve it out question.

-

-

Really Pat?

-

FEDERER 6-4 3-6 6-1 1-4 NADAL: Federer isn’t done yet in this set, fighting back from 40-15 to deuce but it’s Nadal who digs deep to consolidate the break with an outrageous sliced winner when the point looked Federer’s for all money. Sensational stuff. Definitely looking like a five setter now.

FEDERER 6-4 3-6 6-1 1-3 NADAL: BREAK! Federer makes a glaring forehand error on a mid-court put away and then mistimes a forehand. A typical Nadal forehand winner earns three break points and Federer nets a volley to concede the break. Of course, we’re going 5 sets, aren’t we?

-

Too close to call...

FEDERER 6-4 3-6 NADAL: SET NADAL! The serve out wide and forehand into open court is a combination that has always worked for Nadal and he uses it to good effect to earn three set points. He levels up the match as Federer hits long. We have a final!

-

FEDERER 6-4 3-5 NADAL: Slick tennis from Federer is keeping Nadal honest in this set. An inside out forehand winner completes a quick hold but Nadal will serve for the set.

-
-

FEDERER 6-4 2-5 NADAL: Nadal back into the groove on serve. He races to a love hold to move to within a game of levelling up this final.

-

FEDERER 6-4 2-4 NADAL: Sweat pouring off Nadal’s head, in contrast to the ice cool Federer. The contrast in styles always making this match up an absolute classic. -
-

FEDERER 6-4 1-4 NADAL: BREAK! Federer striking the ball much harder and more freely, perhaps in frustration at this set slipping away. A crunching forehand winner gives him another break point and he gets one of them back with a forehand into the open court.

FEDERER 6-4 0-2 NADAL: NADAL BREAKS! Federer opens with a first double, as rare as hens teeth and then comes out on the wrong end of a typical Nadal power rally to go 0-30 down. -

FEDERER 5-4 NADAL: Federer looking so focused, not missing on either flank to rush Nadal into a forehand error. -

FEDERER 3-3 NADAL: A first ‘come on’ from Federer as Nadal hits long on the opening point and he follows up with a clean forehand winner and an ace to move to 40-0. Another flying forehand gives the Swiss a first love hold.

-
-

FEDERER 2-3 NADAL: Nadal looking ominous on serve, pummelling huge groundies to hold to love. The Spaniard is on form.

-
-
-
-

FEDERER 1-2 NADAL: Federer scores with a lovely forehand winner into the ad corner but then can’t return a vicious swinging first serve.
