The Frenchman and the 19-year--old American - who won the Wimbledon boys' title in 2014 - matched each other blow-for-blow during the match, which was decided by three tie-breaks.
Both players had plenty of break points - 11 for Rubin, 13 for Paire - over the course of the match, and they broke each other once in the second set and twice in the third set.

But the 328th-ranked Rubin kept his composure better to secure the victory - not just in the tie-breaks, either, as Paire's temper reared its head early in the match as he smashed a racquet after a seemingly innocuous first serve on an unimportant point went into the net.
Paire's mood did not improve after the match. Rather than go through the usual platitudes, the 26-year-old rubbished his opponent's efforts, saying that his own dreadful performance was the only factor in the result.
"Not much to say except it was a catastrophe," said Paire.
"He's not a good player, but I was very bad today.
"Yes, he's not a very good player. I was worse than him today."
