Gael Monfils was a 7-5 6-3 6-2 winner against fellow Frenchman Stephane Robert in the third round of the Australian Open as he set up a meeting with Andrey Kuznetsov in the last 16.
The eighth seed completed his progress in one hour and 47 minutes against his talented countryman, who is more used to competing on the Challenger Tour but still managed to entertain the crowd with some terrific shots.
"It will be tougher than people think," said Monfils of his meeting with Russian Kuznetsov after a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) win over Dudi Sela.
"Kuznetsov hits well from both sides and has improved a lot recently.
Was never easy to play against Stephane. He’s going for some shots, some crazy ideas, some crazy tactics.
"I feel I manage to win in straight set, and I think I did pretty good on that.”
