Earlier in the day Juan Martin del Potro had come from behind to defeat Marin Cilic and draw Argentina level at 2-2.
That set things up for Delbonis and Karlovic and despite some concerns the Argentine didn't look flustered during either of the first two sets.
In the third set the volume and pressure cranked up a notch but Delbonis kept focusing on his game, and kept forcing errors from his opponent.
His victory means Argentina have created two unique pieces of history. Not only is it the first time they have won the Davis Cup, after coming second on four occasions, it is also just the third time since 1981 that a team has come from 2-1 down in the final to win 3-2.
Speaking afterwards Del Potro revealed that he broke a finger during his game.
"It happened when I tried to catch a ball in the fifth set,
"This was an emotionally exhausting match and one of the biggest wins of my career. Thanks to all those who prevented me from retiring, I was very close to never playing again and, well, here I am."
