Kyle Edmund admitted he exceeded his own expectations by beating 13th seed Richard Gasquest in straight sets in their US Open first round clash.
The Brit won 6-2 6-2 6-3 to cause the upset and ease into the second round, in which he will play Lukas Lacko or Ernesto Escobedo.
Edmund's serve and forehand were too much for an out-of-sorts Gasquet, as the 21-year-old registered his first win in a Grand Slam singles match away from Rolland Garos.
Having raced through the first two sets 6-2, Gasquet looked to have got a foothold in the third, breaking Edmund to lead 3-1, but the Brit hit back and rattled off five straight games to win his first ever main draw match at Flushing Meadows.
"I'm extremely happy right now. The crowd support was incredible, I didn't expect I'd get this much support if I'm being honest. I'm happy I was able to give back some really good tennis," Edmund said after the match.
"I played really well, went about my process and didn't really worry about who I was playing. I probably played better than I expected.
"I always know in best-of-five sets there's up and downs and I was obviously riding a high until I got broken in the third set. When I broke him at 3-2 I thought I'd really push it home and take it to him."
Edmund, ranked 84 in the world, had previously only won two singles matches at the French Open, but lost in the opening rounds of the Australian Open and Wimbledon on six occasions.
