Victoria Azarenka was forced to retire in the first round of the French Open during her match with Karin Knapp after trying to battle through a knee injury.
The Belarusian No 5 seed - a two-time Grand Slam champion - was clearly struggling with a knee problem, but attempted to finish her match despite hobbling in points and getting clearly frustrated.
But her Italian opponent, who is ranked at 118 in the world, went 6-3 6-7 4-0 up before her opponent called it a day and will face Anastasija Sevastova in round two.
It is a huge blow to Azarenka, who suffered the injury during the second set and was forced to take an extended injury break before playing on.
She somehow managed to win the third set (8-6 in a tie-break) but was plagued by the knee problem in the third set before she decided to call it a day.
Her best performance at Roland Garros remains her run to the last four in Paris in 2013.
