Halep survives big scare

6-Simona Halep (Romania) beat Zarina Diyas (Kazakhstan) 7-6(5) 6-2 - Sixth seed Simona Halep was a pre-tournament favourite having recently played herself into form after a poor start to the season, but she looked anything but a contender as she quickly trailed Kazakh Zarina Diyas - the world number 90 - 4-1 in the opening set. In a match full of errors (at one point Halep gave up a service break with consecutive double faults) the Romanian finally got to grips with her opponent after squeezing through a tough tie-break to eventually win in straight sets.
"The first set was very tough and I was very nervous as I seemed to be fighting for every point," Halep said in a courtside interview.

Kvitova breezes through

10-Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic) beat Hsieh Su-Wei (Taiwan) 6-4 6-1 - The double Wimbledon champion enjoyed a straightforward second round victory in Paris, losing just five games as she progressed. The smoothness of the progress will be a huge relief after her serious scare in the first round, in which Danka Kovinic served for the match before Kvitova came through in a final set decider.

Nishikori shows class in win over Kuznetsov

5-Kei Nishikori (Jpn) beat Andrey Kuznetsov (Rus) 6-3 6-3 6-3 - Kei Nishikori moved into the last 32 of the French Open with a comfortable win over Andrey Kutnetsov.

Nishikori showed his class by forcing Novak Djokovic to three hours in the semi-finals of the Rome Masters before losing narrowly, and remains on course for a possible quarter-final meeting with Andy Murray at Roland Garros. The 2014 US Open finalist enjoyed six breaks of serve in completing a straight sets win to set up a meeting with Fernando Verdasco in the third round. A lapse in concentration allowed Kuznetsov to break back but that was only a minor inconvenience as Nihsikori broke the Russian's serve in the next game with sweetly struck forehand winner. Nishikori was playing well inside his comfort zone as he eased through the third set and sealed the win with another sublime backhand pass. "After going 3-1 down (in the first set) I tried to change it up a little bit and it started working better," he said. "Second and third I think I played pretty good tennis."

Muguruza demolishes Georges

4-Garbine Muguruza Blanco (Spain) beat Myrtille Georges (France) 6-2 6-0 - 2015 Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza slaughtered her second round opponent in just 53 minutes, losing just two games in the process and bagelling the hapless French hopeful in the second set. It was a huge confidence boost for the fourth seed after she was pushed hard in her opening match on Monday.

Kyrgios makes light work of Sijsling

17-Nick Kyrgios (Australia) beat Igor Sijsling (Netherlands) 6-3 6-2 6-1 - Nick Kyrgios followed up his shaky first-round start with a more convincing victory over Netherlands' Igor Sijsling, currently ranked 123 in the world, in his second round match on Wednesday. Kyrgios will play either Bjorn Fratangelo or Richard Gasquet in the third round.

Raonic sees off Mannarino

8-Milos Raonic (Canada) beat Adrian Mannarino 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 6-1 - Despite a shaky second set which Adrian Mannarino threatened to take off big-hitter Milos Raonic, the Canadian returned to form in the third to see off Frenchman Mannarino in straight sets over an hour and 36 minutes. Serving up a total of seven aces, eighth seeded Raonic has yet to drop a set and will face Andrej Martin in the third round.
