Grigor Dimitrov and Marin Cilic hopes are over while Sabine Lisicki and Christian McHale also crashed out of the first round of the French Open on Monday.

Cilic suffers shock defeat

Marco Trungelliti bt Marin Cilic 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 - Former US Open champion Marin Cilic suffered a shock 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 6-4 6-2 defeat to qualifier Marco Trungelliti. World number 166 Trungelliti enjoyed seven breaks of serve in outsting the 10th seed in four sets. Cilic lost to Stanislas Wawrinka in the final of the Geneva Open on Saturday. Trungelliti was making his debut at Roland Garros after reaching the Australian Open second round at the outset of the year. He is due to face Horacio Zeballos or Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the second round.

Lisicki loses to unknown Paraguayan

Veronica Cepede Royg bt Sabine Lisicki 6-2 6-2 - Former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki crashed out of the first round as she lost to Paraguay's 161st-ranked Cepede. Lisicki, the world number 51, has a poor record at Roland Garros having never been beyond the third round, but her early exit remained the biggest shock of a rain-hit second day in Paris - and in particular the one-sided manner of her defeat. Lisicki has had a miserable 2016 so far, winning just a handful of matches, and only once making it as far as a quarter-final.

Sloane Stephens powers into round two

Sloane Stephens bt Margarita Gasparyan 6-4 6-3 - American 19th seed Sloane Stephens fought past a very tough first round opponent in the form of Russia's world number 55. Gasparyan traded winners with the American and showed some good form, but ultimately fell short. She has not won a match on tour now since Indian Wells in March, while Stephens - who won the Charleston clay tournament last month - demonstrated good form in the victory and looks set to continue her run of making it to the second week for the last four years.

Troicki ousts Dimitrov in five sets

Victor Troicki bt Grigor Dimitrov 2-6 6-3 5-7 7-5 6-3 - In a match lasting three hours and 45 minutes, Serbian number 22 seed Troicki ended the unseeded Dimitrov's hopes by winning the final two sets against the Bulgarian player in an epic duel. It is another disappointing defeat for Dimitrov, who has yet to make good on his early potential in the sport. Bulgaria’s leading player has not won a singles title since 2014 and has slumped to 36 in the world having been as high as number eight two years ago.

Broady debut ends in brave defeat

Coco Vandeweghe bt Naomi Broady 6-4 3-6 6-3 - Naomi Broady's French Open debut ended in a battling defeat to American Coco Vandeweghe. Broady became the third British woman inside the top 100 in February and earned her place at a Grand Slam on ranking for the first time at Roland Garros. Clay is her least favourite surface but the same can be said for fellow big server Vandeweghe and it was a close contest that the British player eventually lost 6-4 3-6 6-3. Broady, from Stockport, began confidently and led 4-2 but from there she lost five straight games. She recovered to win the second set and was 2-0 up in the third but another run of five successive games for Vandeweghe proved decisive. It has nevertheless been a positive experience for Broady, and the 30,000 euro she will collect will mean she is at last making money from tennis.
