Rain interrupts play

Play was finally cancelled at around 17:30 BST following interruptions throughout the day, delaying the outcome of Great Britain's Heather Watson who was just behind the USA's Nicole Gibbs in he third set on 7-5 2-6 2-1. Kei Nishikori's first-round match against Simone Bolelli, where the 5th seed was leading the Italian 6-1 7-5 2-1, was also interrupted by the inclement weather.

Kyrgios battles into second round

Nick Kyrgios bt Marco Cecchinato 7-6 7-6 6-4 - Australian wild-child Nick Kyrgios was pushed all the way in his opening match against unheralded Italian Marco Cecchinato. while Kyrgios won the lion's share of the points, Cecchinato - in his first French Open - kept his nerve brilliantly on big points as he stayed with his opponent almost throughout.

He even saved match point in the penultimate game, only for Kyrgios to serve out and book a spot in round two. "It's been a match of real quality," said Eurosport commentator Frew MccMillan at the end.
If the play was classic Kyrgios, however, so was the behaviour: the Aussie was warned by umpire Carlos Ramos after shouting at a ball boy in the opening set. "A code violation for saying towel loud?" Kyrgios said in a fiery exchange with Ramos. "Now I've seen it all. That's bull**t....are you kidding?"

Kvitova survives huge scare

Petra Kvitova bt Danka Kovinic 6-2 4-6 7-5 - Twice Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova suffered an almighty scare against her Montenegrin opponent on the opening day at Roland Garros. After coming through a one-sided first set, Kvitova lost her grip on the match as Kovinic came roaring back at her, winning the second and then serving for the match in the third set.

The 10th seed dug in however, breaking back to stay in the match and then winning the next two games to earn a place in the second round.

Pavlyuchenkova loses just two games in opener

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova bt Sara Sorribes 6-2 6-0 - Pavlyuchenkova was in top form against a faltering opponent on the opening day of action at Roland Garros, where the predicted terrible weather turned out not to be quite bad enough to wash out the opening morning. The Russian lost just two games, but Sorribes was in a sorry state, giving the game up on match point with a second serve that was nowhere near the box.
But while the 24th seed's tennis was good, however, her choice of shirt was... well... unusual, to say the least:

Paire wins wonderful five-setter

Benoit Paire bt Radu Albot 6-2 4-6 6-4 1-6 6-4 - French 19th seed Benoit Paire provided the first five-setter of the tournament, and some of the best entertainment of the opening morning at Roland Garros.
