Heather Watson shocks Sara Errani, Venus Williams through

A frantic first set saw seven breaks of serve, with the Briton taking four of her five break opportunities, but Errani regrouped to take the second set courtesy of three breaks of serve to the Briton’s one.

However, Watson, who had to qualify for the event broke her opponent another three times in the decider to bagel Errani and move into the next round, where she will face the Czech Republic's Barbora Strycova.

Elsewhere, it was serene progress for Venus Williams, who beat CoCo Vandeweghe 6-4 6-3 in one hour and 28 minutes.

Williams managed to break her compatriot to go 5-3 but Vandeweghe claimed an immediate break back. However, Williams responded in kind to take the first stanza.

The 35-year-old broke Vandeweghe early in the second before seeing it out to reach round two.
