Tim Henman cruised into the second round of the Madrid Masters after a comfortable 7-5 6-3 win over Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.
The 32-year-old Briton showed the kind of stylish play that has taken him to the semi-finals of Wimbledon and the French Open during his career, as he defeated the player ranked 15 places above him.
It was level pegging in the early games, but Henman upped the pressure in the 12th to break serve and take the set.
He broke again early in the second and played some fluent tennis as he rattled off an easy victory.
Henman, who lost to Roger Federer in the final of the Japan Open earlier this month, will now meet 14th seeded Spaniard David Ferrer.
"I served fantastically well and at the right times," said a satisfied Henman.
"It's a good start for me and good to continue where I left off on Tokyo."
