Nadal, an eight-time champion in Monte Carlo, was broken once in each set but his superior quality prevailed as he won in just over 80 minutes.
The nine-time French Open winner now faces 12th seed Dominic Thiem in the next round.
Thiem, who beat Nadal when they met at the semi-final stage of Beunos Aires Open back in February, came from a set down to beat qualifier Taro Daniel 4-6 6-2 6-0.
Earlier, Stan Wawrinka overcame Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6(2) 7-5 to also secure safe passage to the next round.
"It was a good first match, first match on clay," Wawrinka told the ATP website.
"It's never easy to find the rhythm and to play the perfect match. In general, I'm quite happy with the level already."
