Last year's beaten finalist, who will start the tournament as top seed for the first time, has won both his previous encounters with the world number 85 - though has never faced him on clay.
Murray has failed to progress beyond the third round in his three most recent Masters 1000 tournaments on clay, losing in the second round of last week's Italian Open to home favourite Fabio Fognini.
And while his preparations for Paris have not been ideal, compounded by a bout of shingles early in the season, Murray is talking up another good run, following last year's first-ever final appearance.
"The last few months have been difficult but I believe I will turn it around and I hope it starts here," said Murray, whose win in Dubai in February is his only tournament victory in 2017.
"I'm ranked number one in the world, so there are worse positions to be in. I always feel an extra motivation when I come to a slam, even if I've been playing badly recently.
"I'll admit that after reaching world number one, there's been some times this year where it has been difficult to keep up the motivation and set new goals."
Murray could face Juan Martin Del Potro in a repeat of their epic Olympic final in the third round while Stanislas Wawrinka, the 2015 champion, may await in the semi-finals.
However, defending champion Novak Djokovic and nine-time winner Rafael Nadal are in the other half of the draw.
Meanwhile, British women's number one Johanna Konta, who is seeded seven in Paris, will take on Chinese Taipei's Su-Wei Hsieh, the players deadlocked at one match each in their head-to-head record.
Konta, making her third appearance at the event, is still searching for her first win in Paris but is brimming with confidence following her Miami Open win earlier this year.
Britain's Kyle Edmund takes on Gastao Elias while Dan Evans plays Tommy Robredo and Aljaz Bedene faces Ryan Harrison.
But Heather Watson will not be joining them in the main draw following a 6-0, 6-3 defeat to Richèl Hogenkamp in the final qualifying round in Paris on Friday.
Elsewhere, second seed Djokovic faces Spain's Marcel Granollers while fourth seed Nadal faces France's Benoit Paire.
Defending women's champion Garbine Muguruza opens up against 2010 winner Francesca Schiavone.
