Naomi Broady booked her place in the second round of the Rogers Cup with a three-set victory over Puerto Rico's Monica Puig in Montreal.
The big-serving Broady lost the first set 6-3 but bounced back strongly, winning the next two 6-4 6-2 to triumph in a contest which lasted for more than two hours.
Next up for the 26-year-old from Stockport is a match against third seed, and French Open Champion, Garbine Muguruza, of Spain.
However, there was disappointment for fellow Briton Heather Watson, who was beaten 7-5 6-3 by Australia's Samantha Stosur.
The British No 2, fresh from mixed doubles glory at Wimbledon, tried in vain to get on the front foot, directing the ball and making her Australian opponent move, but she was broken early in the second set, before another flurry of unforced errors led to her downfall.
