Rafael Nadal sweeps past Gael Monfils in Stuttgart

Rafael Nadal remains on course for his first grass court title since Wimbledon in 2010 after he beat France’s Gael Monfils 6-3 6-4 in the semi-finals of ATP Stuttgart.

The 29-year-old, who is the top seed in the tournament, swept past an off-colour Monfils inside 80 minutes to reach the showpiece match in what is also known as the Mercedes Cup.

Monfils was hampered by problems with his serve throughout and conceded five double faults.

In addition, the mercurial Frenchman failed to convert any of his four break points as Nadal was left pretty comfortable throughout.

The Spaniard will face either Viktor Troicki in Sunday’s final after Troicki beat second-seed Marin Cilic 6-3 6-7 7-6.
