Kei Nishikori, Nick Kyrgios and Dominc Thiem earns wins in the second round of the US Open.
Nishikori pushed hard by superb Khachanov
Kei Nishikori was forced to dig deep to beat young Russian starlet Karen Khachanov in the second round of the US Open.
In a rain interrupted match the Kapanese sixth seed won the opening set, but then lost the next and was pushed hard thereafter by the 20-year-old.
He came through in the end, however, eventually winning 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3.
"I played great tennis, I'm very happy," said Nishikori.
"Especially in the third set he was playing really well, serving very well...
"It was a tough time [but] after the rain delay I was playing good tennis."
Next up for Nishikori is France's Nicolas Mahut, who beat compatriot Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4 6-4 6-2.
Kyrgios battles through
Australian bad boy Nick Kyrgios defied injury to surge into the third round.
Kyrgios showcased a serving masterclass to sweep past Horacio Zeballos 7-5 6-4 6-4 in one hour and 56 minutes.
Despite battling a painful hip flexor injury, the 14th seed was untouchable on serve, hammering down 27 aces and not offering his Argentine opponent a solitary break-point.
Kyrgios's impressive victory helped the 21-year-old into the last 32 of all four Grand Slam events in a single season for the first time.
Thiem cruises through with ease
Dominic Thiem, the Austrian eighth seed, looked in great shape as he eased to a straight sets win against Lithuania's Ricardas Berankis.
