17.40

PLISKOVA 6-2 6-1 LINETTE: A strong start from the top seed and World No.1, who eases into the second round with a straight-sets win over Magda Linette. If the first set scoreline flattered her a little, Karolina Pliskova imposed herself in the second and blew away the Polish No.2.

Short but sweet, and that will stand her in good stead for bigger challenges ahead.

17.01

ROOF CLOSING ON ASHE! It's not raining hard (or at all, as far I can tell) but obviously the organisers think it's coming.

16.58

PLISKOVA 6-2 LINETTE: First set to the World No.1, who seals the final game with a forceful backhand into space after forcing Linette wide. The set scoreline probably flatters her a little but so far, so good.

16.47

PLISKOVA 4-2 LINETTE: It's comfortable but not utterly dominant for Pliskova, who loses the latest game to love. She still leads by a break, though.

16.42

Simona Halep and Jo Konta have missed their chance to take the World No.1 spot and Pliskova must repeat last year's run to have a chance...

16.39

PLISKOVA 3-1 LINETTE: So far, so good for Pliskova, who earns a first break courtesy of some erratic serving from the Polish no.2. She seals the game with a couple of crisp forehands, which left Linette sprawling.

Slowly, but surely, Ashe is filling up but there's still more empty seats than people out there.

16.17

Karolina Pliskova and Magda Linette are warming up in an almost entirely empty Arthur Ashe Stadium. It should fill up pretty quickly if Pliskova can repeat the kind of form she showed on the way to the final here last year, though.

It's cloudy and there's apparently some rain across town in Manhattan. But still dry at Flushing Meadows...for now.
