Seventh seed Cilic falls to America's Jack Sock

Marin Cilic, one of the strongest outside bets to win the US Open, fell to a shock defeat to home favourite Jack Sock on Louis Armstrong.

Highlights: Cilic out in straight sets to Sock

Sock is seeded 26th but Cilic had the pedigree at Flushing Meadows, having won the US Open in 2014; what's more, he was in superb form having beaten Andy Murray in the final of the Cincinnati Masters.
Yet Sock had the benefit of having beaten Cilic in a David Cup match recently, and seemed to draw on that confidence as he dominated throughout.
He was impeccable on serve as he did not face a single break point while converting four of six break opportunities against the seventh-seeded Cilic.

The Croat was quite simply outplayed as the American world number 24 won 6-4 6-3 6-4 to earn a last-16 match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
"My first time in the fourth round here," Sock said. "It was a big match for me, a big goal of mine.
"There's nothing better than playing in front of the home crowd here in New York. I put it out there on the line on every point."

Raonic's conqueror Harrison loses to veteran Baghdatis

Two days ago, Ryan Harrison was on top of the world of tennis after springing the biggest surprise of the tournament so far by beating Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic.
On Friday, however, Harrison was humbled as he got knocked out of the US Open by veteran Marcos Baghdatis, the Cypriot winning 6-3 7-6(4) 1-6 6-1.
Both players put on a great show, each pulling off 'hot dog' shots between their legs at different points.

Ultimately, however, Baghdatis - in his 13th season as a professional - made the most of his experience to make the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time since the 2009 Australian Open.

Tsonga won 6-3 6-4 7-6(4) against the 23rd seed, but had to dig deep to do so – and never more than in the third set, when the Frenchman was forced to save a succession of set points while serving at 4-5 down.
The former Australian Open finalist pumped his fist in delight after coming through that epic game, and then went on to win the subsequent tie-break – though even that was packed with drama, Anderson at one point successfully reviewing a shot that clipped the line by a millimetre.

Tsonga finally earned a match point on his own serve, and closed things out with a blistering and unplayable serve that put him into the last 16.
"I just played good tennis today," he said. "I hope I'll continue in this manner...
"It's a long way to go through the draw - I try to go through each match as good as possible, and increase my tennis. That's it!"

Monfils beats Almagro despite ankle scare

Tenth seed Gael Monfils of France survived a late health scare to beat Nicolas Almagro 6-4 6-2 6-4 in the third round.
Monfils was in typically majestic and entertaining form during the match, but he appeared to twist his ankle badly at 5-3 in the final set.
Thankfully, however, he seemed to shake off the problem - and having looked like he could barely walk, was suddenly able to jog back to his chair.
"I'm happy, I played very tough, I was very solid," said Monfils.
"[Now] I need good recovery and then I think I have a big one against Baghdatis."
