US Open Breakfast - Jo Konta survives collapse to win, Raonic and Muguruza tumble out

Johanna Konta recovered from a terrifying collapse to defeat Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2 5-7 6-2 on a day when two big seeds fell by the wayside.
Konta, who made the semi-finals of the Australian Open, looked in no state to continue as the heat seemed to get the better of her but she then made a remarkable recovery to win through 6-2 5-7 6-2. Read more.
There was further British success for Kyle Edmund, who followed up his impressive first round win over Richard Gasquet with a straight sets win over Ernesto Escobedo.
But there was one big shock in the men’s draw as Wimbledon finalist and highly-fancied Canadian Milos Raonic fell victim to American Ryan Harrison, losing out in four sets.

And the shocks continued on the women’s side, Spanish third seed Garbine Muguruza slumping to a 7-5 6-4 loss to Latvian Anastasija Sevastova.
There were no such problems for Second seed Angelique Kerber, who stayed on track in her quest to unseat Serena Williams as world number one by beating Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia 6-2 7-6(7) on Wednesday to reach the third round of the U.S. Open. Read more.
In the final night match, Rafael Nadal cruised past Italy's Andreas Seppi in straight sets and in doing so, the US Open saw the roof closed for the very first time as spots of rain begain to fall midway through the second set.
And struggling Novak Djokovic's job was made that much easier as opponent Jiri Vesely handed him a walkover into the third round.

Stat of the day
Novak Djokovic progressed to the third round by default after Jiri Vesely had to pull out thanks to an inflamed left forearm. It was Djokovic's second Walkover in a Grand Slam tournament after Fabio Fogini withdrew from the 2011 Roland Garros quarter-final with a thigh injury.
