Novak Djokovic came back from two sets down to beat Kevin Anderson 6-7 6-7 6-1 6-4 7-5 in a delayed five-set thriller.
The Serb returned to Court No 1 to see off the big-serving South African after the match had been suspended on Monday evening.
Anderson had Djokovic rattled early on but was unable to take advantage of two break points in the fourth game.
The set went with serve until two consecutive Anderson double faults at 5-5 handed the world No 1 a pair of break points. Djokovic duly sealed his advantage with a stunning return to the feet of the on-rushing Anderson, who could only plant his volley into the net.
The 28-year-old will now face another big server – Croatia’s Marin Cilic – in the quarter-finals as he bids to retain his title.
"Kevin served exceptionally well," Djokovic said. "This was one of the most difficult matches I have played at Wimbledon in my career.
"At times I was helpless with my return - it was very difficult to read his serve.
"I was two sets down and coming back to win gives me great satisfaction and confidence for my next challenge."
