DOHA – A FISU delegation was present at the AIPS 79
th
Annual Congress which is hosted in Doha, Qatar from 7 to 11 February, 2016. FISU President Oleg Matytsin presented the vision and values of FISU and gave an update of FISU future activities to the representatives of the International Sports Press. He was accompanied by FISU First Assessor and Chair of the FISU Media and Communication Committee Verena Burk. High authorities from the Qatar Government attended the Congress, e.g. the Qatar Prime Minister His Highness Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani was present during the officially opening the 79
th
AIPS Congress on 8 February.
In his presentation on 8 February the FISU President Oleg Matytsin gave first a short insight of the FISU history and present the AIPS delegates the philosophy and vision of FISU to create a world where every leader in society has been positively influenced by their experience with University sport. He described the alignment with the Olympic Movement and explained why the Olympic Agenda 2020 is at the heart of FISU thinking and decision making. Matytsin also mentioned the FISU communication and media tools in their importance in acting for the health and wellbeing of students around the world and thereby help them to become tomorrow’s leaders. At the end the FISU President also looked ahead of the upcoming events – the World University Championships, the FISU Forum and the International Day of University Sport for 2016 as well as the Winter and Summer Universiades for 2017.
Other speakers at the congress were representatives of UEFA, FIFA, IAAF, FIG, Special Olympics, and the International Centre for Sport Security. Therefore, the 79
th
AIPS Congress was not only an excellent opportunity to make contact with the sport journalists of different countries and to strength the relationship between FISU and AIPS but also to meet representatives from FISU partner sport organisations to intensify the cooperation.
