LISBOA - The Portuguese Government applauded the university students selected to compete in the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade, during the presentation session that took place on 18 June, at the Ministry of Education and Science.
Both the Secretary of State for Higher Education, José Ferreira Gomes, and the Secretary of State for Sports and Youth, Emídio Guerreiro, referred to them as role models for other university students. "Youth need role models and heroes and you are a reference to your colleagues. You are young people who believe and work hard and that is what the country needs", they said.
Combining their sports practices with their studies is a great effort that not everyone is able to do, so José Ferreira Gomes called them an “elite”, who “has an important role in our society and especially in higher education”.
The Head of the Portuguese Delegation and President of the Portuguese NUSF (FADU Portugal), Filipa Godinho, also reinforced this message and congratulated the athletes for being the best both in studies and sports, and for conquering the opportunity to represent Portugal at the highest level.
Filipa seized the moment to announce Rui Bragança as the Portuguese flag bearer at the Universiade. He is recently winner of a gold medal in Taekwondo (-58kg) at the 1st European Games, in Baku, and fits the criteria to play this role by having previously participated in the Universiade and WUC and by having both good academic grades and excellent sports results.
The Portuguese Delegation is composed of 46 athletes, 12 coaches and 11 officials that will compete in 10 sports: Handball (m), Athletics, Artistic Gymnastics, Fencing, Judo, Swimming, Rowing, Taekwondo, Table Tennis and Archery. The participants were selected by FADU with the support of the national sports federations.
