Universiade Champion adds World Title to Palmares

LAUSANNE - Korean archer Ki Bo Bae was crowned World Champion at the latest World Archery World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, earlier this month. By doing so, the London 2012 Olympic Champion and 2015 Universiade Champion is no longer missing the World Champion title she coveted.

“There are no words that can describe what I am feeling at this moment,” Ki Bo Bae managed to say in between deep breaths, smiles and starting to tear up. “I think I’m going to cry.”

Olympic Champion at London 2012, she was missing and desperately wanted the world champion title for her resume.

“In 2014, I wasn’t selected for the national team because I wasn’t shooting well. During that year I thought that if I practised a lot I could win a world title and make it to the Olympics again. I forgot about the bad things.”

However, she made a great comeback in her home country Korea by not only winning the gold at the Gwangju Universiade but also breaking two World Records at the FISU Games, scoring 686 out of a possible 720 points in the women’s recurve individual rounds on the first day of the Universiade archery competition and with the Korean women’s recurve team together with Choi Misun and Kang Chaeyoung scoring 2,038, six more points than the previous world record of 2,032, set in 2014. Team mate Choi Misun collected bronze at the 2015 Worlds.

If her goal is Rio 2016, Ki Bo Bae is off to a good start.
