Drivers want Rally Poland safety improvements

Confirmation that Rally Poland will stay on the World Rally Championship calendar next season has prompted some of the championship's leading stars to push the FIA to further improve safety.

Earlier this year the Mikolajki-based rally ran under with a yellow card from the governing body, after questions were raised regarding spectator safety on the 2015 event.
While there were no incidents at this season's rally following measures such as an increase in the number of marshals, some of the drivers still fear the fans are getting too close.
The new generation WRC cars, set to be significantly faster with bigger turbo restrictors, beefed up aerodynamics and a centre differential, have added to concerns.
"I like this rally, but we need to keep the safety in mind - especially with the new car coming," Hyundai driver Dani Sordo said.
"There are a lot of spectators on this rally and sometimes they are a little bit in the middle of the road.
"We need to be careful, if not they will cancel the rally and this will be a big disappointment for all of the fans.
"I know the FIA is a little bit angry now and we need to remember the safety is so important.
"Sometimes we see the fans being crazy, like they want to feel the car - but if they feel they car, they will feel it only once.
"We need them further back, the FIA knows this and is working on it."
Rally Poland will be the eighth round of the 2017 WRC season, on June 30-July 2.
